In addition to spending your summer nights listening to world-class performing artists in the midst of our Gardens’ lush, natural beauty—many Garden Pass Members will also take in inspiring live music at one of our neighboring venues, World Cafe Live at the Queen. This second World Cafe Live location opened its doors in downtown Wilmington, DE on April 1 after a long restoration of the original Queen Theater.
Like its sister location in Philadelphia’s University City, this is a multi-stage venue that also is home to a WXPN broadcast studio. The upstairs live venue holds 150 seats, and has a bar, stage, and full-service restaurant. Additionally, there is a 250-person private room that overlooks Wilmington’s Market Street. The main concert room on the first floor holds 800 guests (see article photo courtesy of Matt Urban / Möbius New Media, Inc.).
“We're thrilled to bring a diverse group of regional, emerging and established musicians to Wilmington," says Real Entertainment Group founder Hal Real, who hopes World Cafe Live at the Queen will bring a vibrant new energy to the city.
To reopen its doors as World Cafe Live at the Queen, the original Queen Theater underwent a massive restoration. About the process, Real says, “Rebuilding the Queen has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—we refurbished everything from the inside out and ground up.”
Marketing Manager Sarah Davenport is excited to not only form community partnerships with Longwood Gardens, but with many other local organizations as well. “We really value our relationships within the community – we are pleased to say that we’ve established beginning partnerships with the Delaware Children’s Museum, Delaware Historical Society, Delaware College of Art & Design, and more,” says Davenport.
Although this second location of World Cafe Live is almost 30 miles from the Philadelphia location, Davenport feels that it will be just as successful. She says, “WXPN and World Café Live Philly have thousands of existing fans for whom this location is more accessible and convenient for. Plus, it’s close enough to regional fans to provide additional entertainment choices. We also have a great event space to host a variety of celebrations from weddings to Bat & Bar Mitzvahs, corporate events to birthday parties and more!”
World Cafe Live at the Queen is located at 500 N. Market Street Wilmington, DE 19801. Bookmark their website for information about upcoming concerts, free at noon shows, and more exciting events this summer.
