NEW! Environmental Stewardship
Identify sustainable practices throughout our Gardens, and learn about changes that you can make at home, in school, and in the community to work toward a greener tomorrow. In this STEM-based lesson, discover how Longwood uses solar energy, recycling, composting, gardening techniques, and water management practices to reduce our environmental impact.

- Standard 9: Understands the sources and properties of energy
- Standard 14: Understands how human actions modify the physical environment
- Standard 16: Understand the changes that occur in the meaning, use, distribution, and importance of resources
National Geography Standards
- Standard 8: Understands the characteristics of ecosystems on Earth's surface
- Standard 14: Knows the ways in which the physical environment is stressed by human activities
- Standard 15: Understands how physical systems affect human systems
National Economics Standards
- Standard 1: Understands that scarcity of productive resources requires the choices that generate opportunity costs
Biodiversity, Adaptations, and Biomes
Travel through Longwood's four-acre Conservatory to experience the characteristics of different biomes. Identify specific adaptations and explore diverse plant species surviving in unique environments.
National Science Standards
- Standard 6: Understands the relationship among organisms and their physical environment
- Standard 7: Knows how variation of organisms within a species increases the chance of survival of the species, and how the great diversity of species on Earth increase the chance of survival of life in the event of major global changes
National Geography Standards
- Standard 8: Understands the characteristics of ecosystems on Earth's surface
- Standard 14: Understands how human actions modify the physical environment
Multiplying Plants: Reproduction and Plant Propagation
Discover plant reproduction in gymnosperms and angiosperms and travel "behind the scenes" to our research and production greenhouses to learn how our horticulturists propagate plants.
National Science Standards
- Standard 5: Understands the processes of cell division and differentiation
- Standard 6: Understands the processes involved in sexual and asexual reproduction
Schedule
Programs are offered T, W, Th, F at 10:00 am and 12:00 pm, and are approximately 90 minutes in length. Reservations require a minimum of 15 students and 2 chaperones.
