Home School Days

Enjoy a day of learning at Longwood Gardens!  Home school students or learning co-ops have a unique opportunity to engage with other students their age. Curriculum lessons are designed to meet National Education Standards for grades K-8, while incorporating garden-based, hands on activities to excite students.

May 20, 10-11:30 am

Beyond Recycling (Grades K-8)
Learn the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy, with focus on solar energy. Participate in hands-on STEM activities throughout our gardens and explore how to conserve energy at home, in school, and in the community.

Environmental Stewardship (Grades 9-12)
Identify sustainable practices throughout our gardens and learn about changes that can be made at home, in school, and in the community to work towards a greener tomorrow. In this STEM-based lesson, learn how Longwood uses solar energy, recycling, composting, gardening techniques, and water management practices to reduce our environmental impact.

October 2, 10-11:30 am

Operation Pollination (Grades K-8)
Discover the connection of living systems and investigate why and how flowering plants have developed with their pollinator partners. Gain an appreciation of this delicate relationship by identifying adaptations of plants and pollinators.

Multiplying Plants (Grades 9-12)
Discover plant reproduction in both gymnosperms and angiosperms at the Gardens and travel "behind-the-scenes" to our research and production greenhouses to learn how our horticulturists propagate plants.

November 8, 10-11:30

Landmark (Grades K-8)
Explore topography by using maps and other geographic tools to navigate and interpret our section of the Earth's surface. Engage in age-appropriate activities to apply basic mapping skills and utilize geographic tools and technologies to locate specific areas in our gardens.
