Floral Design Flower Preparation
Function:
Prepare flowers as they arrive from the wholesaler for use in floral design classes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Arrive in the morning the day before class
- Unpack boxed flowers
- Check flower quality and return unacceptable quality materials
- Compare delivery to order slip, and advise instructor of any discrepancies
- Unpack flowers, cut stems under water, sort out flowers for various class sizes
- Place flowers in containers with water and place containers in cooler or classroom
- Clean work space
- Work with other volunteers to accomplish the work
Requirements/Expectations:
- Ability to work independently and with other volunteers and staff
- Ability to effectively communicate with staff, instructors, and other volunteers
- Ability to lift 20 pounds
- Ability to use flower cutter
- Available to volunteer in the morning
- Complete required orientation and training
- Follow all Longwood Gardens’ policies, procedures, and standards
- Accept direction and guidance of supervisor
- Be punctual and dependable
- Purchase safety shoes as required for the position
Time Required:
- Flower preparation is usually once/week for 1-3 hours, 5-6 consecutive weeks, for each class
- Work a minimum of 6 times per brochure period (Dec.-May, June-Nov.)
