Guest Information Volunteer
Function:
The Guest Information Volunteers (GIV) act as a Conservatory or Peirce-du Pont House greeter, answer guests’ questions, and help orient and direct guests to the various Garden highlights. Guest Information Volunteers are committed to enhance the Longwood guest experience.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Greet and engage guests at the GIV information desk, welcoming them to the Conservatory and to Longwood Gardens.
- Inform guests of special events/opportunities. Share information about daily and seasonal events occurring within the Conservatory and throughout Longwood Gardens using resources provided.
- Inform guests about the Garden Pass Program, Continuing Education classes, Student Programs, or Volunteer opportunities, depending on guests interest.
- Answer visitor questions about the Gardens, know where to find answers from provided information resources, and don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know.”
- Arrive 15 minutes before the start of your shift to familiarize yourself with Longwood’s event schedule and any changes that have taken place in the Conservatory.
- Direct guests to their areas of interest or need.
- Know location of nearest restroom, phone, VSA (for emergencies), etc.
Requirements/Expectations:
- Be friendly, outgoing, and helpful with all Longwood guests.
- Review information for each day’s scheduled events (times and location of classes, tours, etc.).
- Complete required orientation and training (1.5 hours).
- Attended training sessions as needed.
- Be dependable and punctual.
- Have a general understanding of where various sections of the Gardens are located.
- If unable to work an assigned shift, contact Longwood staff.
- Refer to resource binder for questions about the Conservatory and Longwood history.
- Carry copy of Scoop, or daily events schedule, Gardens map and the “green” Handy Fact Book.
- Provide support for emergency situations by contacting VSA’s.
- Follow Longwood Gardens' policies, procedures, and standards.
- Complete sign in sheet for tracking volunteer hours.
Time Required:
- Active participation is dependent on volunteer availability.
- As a Guest Information Volunteer you would be expected to volunteer a minimum of 12 shifts per year (an average of once per month) and attend semi-annual training sessions (about 2-4 hours).
