Library Cataloger

Function: Create an accurate catalog record describing items in the collection and their location, using OCLC and SydneyPlus systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assign appropriate Library of Congress subject headings and call numbers
  • Identify and compare appropriate descriptive and bibliographic information
  • Follow cataloging instructions to ensure a hard copy of the catalog record
  • Carry out other tasks as required under the direction of the Library Assistant

Requirements/Expectations:

  • Ability to work independently and with the Acquisitions Librarian
  • Understanding of the Library of Congress Classification System
  • Familiarity with call numbers
  • General PC knowledge
  • Willingness to learn the SydneyPlus Catalog and Holdings
  • Attention to detail
  • Familiarity with OCLC and how to use the OCLC catalog for original and copycat cataloging
  • Complete required orientation and training
  • Follow Longwood Gardens policies, procedures, and standards
  • Familiarity with the Longwood Library Procedures Manual

Time Required:

  • Four hours per week
  • This position may be held by more than one volunteer
