New for 2009! The Rotational Summer Internship in Public Horticulture

New for 2009, Longwood Gardens is pleased to announce the Rotational Summer Internship in Public Horticulture. Open only to current sophomores and juniors enrolled in a two- or four-year college or university program in horticulture or a related field, the Rotational Summer Internship in Public Horticulture offers students the opportunity to emphasize in either Display Horticulture or Greenhouse Production.

Featuring bi-weekly rotations through five or six different horticultural work areas, this unique internship program is meant to introduce students to the diversity of career opportunities available in public horticulture. Other features and student responsibilities include:

  • 10- or 12-week program, dependent upon individual student availability
  • Bi-weekly plant identification labs
  • Weekly learning activities, including field trips, hands-on workshops, and lectures
  • Final oral presentation
  • Online journal or blog 

Rotational Summer Internship - Display Horticulture Focus

The Display Horticulture Focus will introduce students to the day-to-day operations of an intensively managed horticultural display. The program includes several two-week rotations through both Indoor and Outdoor Display, as well as a rotation through Greenhouse Production and a rotation through Integrated Pest Management. The Display Horticulture Focus is ideal for those students interested in maintenance, design, and visitor interaction within a public display garden.

Rotational Summer Internship - Greehouse Production Focus

The Greenhouse Production Focus will introduce students to the day-to-day operations of a large-scale greenhouse operation in a public display garden. The program includes several two-week rotations through a variety of Greenhouse Production areas, as well as a rotation through Display and a rotation through Integrated Pest Management. The Greenhouse Production Focus is ideal for those students interested in large-scale production of a variety of ornamental plants.
