Seasonal Job Opportunities

Longwood employs seasonal employees in all areas of the Gardens beginning as early as March for the Spring and Summer season. Hours vary by position. All seasonal employees receive free access to the Gardens, a discount at the Gardens Shop, and a discount at the Terrace Restaurant cafeteria when working. EOE.

Guest Services Seasonal Positions

Guest Services Representatives 
The seasonal Guest Services Representative will be responsible for selling tickets, greeting, crowd control, telephone customer service, scanning & rental services, and communicating information to Longwood’s guests on current displays, exhibits, shows and events.  We are looking for candidates who have exceptional customer service, communication and hospitality skills. Work schedules will include weekends, evenings and holidays.  

Custodians
The seasonal custodial worker will perform various duties to ensure the cleanliness and excellent physical appearance of both buildings and grounds. Selected applicants will also work with various departments to assist in the setup of functions and events. We are looking for candidates who have exceptional customer service, communication and hospitality skills.  Work schedules will include weekends, evenings and holidays.  

Facilities Seasonal Positions

Electrical
The seasonal worker in the Electrical Division must have a good work ethic and a willingness to learn the various aspects of the electrical trade.  The applicant will be involved in general housekeeping and material organization in the electrical shop, placement of materials requests with our purchasing agent, and assisting our electrical maintenance staff in their duties.  Applicants having a basic knowledge of electricity are preferred.

Facilities Operations
Seasonal workers in the Facilities Operations Division must have a good work ethic and a willingness to perform various tasks.  Seasonal Opportunities in the Facilities Operations Division are available in our Carpentry, Painting, Central Heat and Plumbing Shops.  The applicant will be involved in assisting our seasoned tradesmen with general and on-demand work requests.  Work will take place in the respective shops as well as within the gardens proper as required.  Applicants must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license.

CAD/GIS Production
The seasonal worker in the CAD/GIS Division must have a good work ethic and a willingness to learn the various aspects of the CAD/GIS Division.  The applicant will be involved in CAD production work using AutoCAD to create or modify as-built electrical and mechanical drawings at Longwood, following Longwood CAD Standards.  Applicant will also be involved with other CAD duties such as floor plan creation/modifying, site map creation/modifying, CAD file naming, drafting architectural/engineering details, and other related CAD tasks.  Knowledge of how to use AutoCAD is mandatory, as well as a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Windows XP.  Background in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, or mapping is a plus.

Civil Division
The seasonal worker in the Civil Division must have a good work ethic and a willingness to perform various tasks.  Some of the duties of the seasonal worker in this area include: assisting the Mason Shop, water fountain debris removal, and the lifting and hauling of various heavy objects and material in all areas of the gardens. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license. 

IT
The seasonal worker in the Information Technology division must have a good work ethic and a willingness to perform day-to-day support of end users’ computer equipment and software. The applicant will assist other IT staff on software and hardware support in addition to various projects including the configuration and operation of networking equipment, E-mail, enterprise applications, virus protection, and security issues related to the computing environment. Knowledge of Microsoft products is preferred.



Horticulture Seasonal Positions

Outdoor Display
Seasonal employees working in the Outdoor Display Division have the opportunity to work with staff gardeners in the various outdoor gardens areas, assisting with a variety of tasks.  These may include planting, weeding, mulching, watering, pruning, deadheading and general garden maintenance. 

Working as a seasonal employee in Outdoor Display is an excellent way to gain or improve your hands-on gardening knowledge and experience as you work with professional gardeners in an exceptional display garden.  Applicants with prior horticultural knowledge or experience are preferred, but we will also train motivated individuals. 

To operate vehicles and equipment, applicants must be at least eighteen years old with a valid driver’s license.

Floriculture
Seasonal employees working in Floriculture have the opportunity to work with staff in various locations throughout the Gardens.   In this position, seasonals may work in Indoor Display, at our Nursery or in the Greenhouse Production Area.  Seasonals in the Floriculture Division will perform a variety of tasks under the direction of our gardeners and growers, as part of a diverse team of staff, students and volunteers. The tasks include, but are not limited to: Moving, staking, tying, potting, watering, fertilizing, grooming, pinching, and pruning of containerized plants as they are prepared for display throughout the gardens. They will also work around and sometimes with pot filling machines, fork lifts, trucks, and utility vehicles. This work is performed in either the Conservatory, greenhouses or at the outdoor summer growing locations. Prior horticultural experience and/or knowledge is preferable.

The term for these positions vary.  To operate vehicles and equipment, applicants must be at least eighteen years old with a valid driver’s license.

Grounds
Seasonal employees in Grounds will work with the Groundskeepers performing a variety of tasks throughout the gardens. Primary work will include maintaining the turfgrass areas. This includes edging beds, string trimming, hand watering, mowing (operating various types and sizes of turf mowing equipment), along with operating small trucks and tractors and utility vehicles.

Natural Lands
Seasonal employees in Natural Lands are responsible for carrying out daily work operations and projects in Longwood’s natural areas and formally maintained landscapes as part of Longwood’s Land Stewardship team to ensure that Longwood’s natural areas are maintained in an ecologically sound manner.  The work is skilled in nature and requires familiarity with equipment and a basic ecological awareness for these natural areas.

Ability to work in the diverse weather and environmental conditions found in the natural land areas of southeastern Pennsylvania is essential.  To operate vehicles and equipment, applicants must be at least eighteen years old with a valid driver’s license.  PA Pesticide Applicator’s license is a plus.
